Turkey and Saudi Arabia Deepn Their Cooperation Against Iran

During his visit to Saudi Arabia the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the situation in the region with Saudi Arabia's King Abd al-Aziz Al Salman Saudi, al-monitor reports. During the meeting the sides expressed serious concerns about Iran's growing influence in Iraq, Yemen, Syria and Lebanon.

After ascending to the throne the new kind of Saudi Arabia obviously tries to form a Sunni regional alliance against Iran. This is how is explained the fact that Er-Riad in some cases closes eyes on Turkish policy – meaning Ankara's support to the Muslim Brothers fight against the Saudi Arabia's Ally Egypt's President el-Sisi.

In order to attract Turkey in the Sunni alliance Saudi Arabia decided to put aside the dispute with Turkey over removing the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from his position. During Erdogan's visit the sides agreed to provide necessary assistance to the Syrian opposition to overthrow Assad. Er-Riad also commited himself to support Turkey establish a non-fly zone on the border with Syria.

Iran’s growing influence in the Middle East does not stem from Turkey’s interests, which, recently has been isolated from the regional policy. In this regard alliance with Saudi Arabia is the best option for Turkey to regain its influence on the region.
