The UN Security Council condemned the destruction of religious and cultural artifacts, as well as burning of thousands of books and manuscripts by the Islamic State, calling it a "terrorist act", Al-Arabiya reports.
"The group must be defeated and the intolerance, violence, and hatred it espouses must be stamped out," – is said in the statement of the UN SC.
Earlier, as Sputnik News informs, the Director of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Irina Bokova has also strongly condemned the attack of the Islamic State and has asked for an "emergency meeting of the Security Council on the protection of Iraq's cultural heritage as an integral element for the country's security."
